The dismissal of incompetent teachers

Thursday, 12 10 – 12 30

Inadequate teaching has been shown to contribute to drop out rates, low test scores and a dislike for school. So severe are the implications that poor teaching has been described as ‘tantamount to educational malpractice’. A recent study has indicated that a very poor teacher has the same effect on performance as a student missing 40% of the school year. This is a topic that is not often discussed and rarely addressed. No Department of Education reports on the issue and only three collect data. It is an issue that is rarely researched.

In this presentation Graham Speight will share the details of his recent research on the dismissal of incompetent teachers. His findings might surprise you. They certainly have implications for the way we lead our schools.
